Power of Words

-->
Some of the greatest things in this life contain just one word
Love, freedom, and happiness they’re all the ones you’ve heard
The words that have in them more power than any person may hold
Words, that when they’re spoken, break everything that you’ve been told
Everyone needs love and everyone must find it
Before we’re too old, we have to search for it, or we’ll be left behind it
Because love can chew us up and spit us out
And we’ll tumble head over heels, and never doubt
That our happily ever after and our “prince charming’s” do exist
Because fairy tales are so much easier to believe than to see how it really is
When the clock strikes midnight, it isn’t just a glass slipper we leave behind
We leave fragments of ourselves for that one special someone to find
Hoping that if we shed enough of ourselves along the way
That our “true love” will pick them up and put it together, and carry us away
But there is no glory in that road because it just leaves us broken
Leaves us wondering where we lost ourselves, and why that word was never spoken
Love lies damaged in the pathway that we’ve left
And we go back to being Cinderella, with floors to be swept
So we try to find our own happiness, believing all the while
That we never needed another person to be the reason we smile
That we can learn to love ourselves, and that will be enough
Only, nobody ever told us something could be so tough
Because through the heartache we’ve endured we’ve been stained like glass
Each shard revealing a different shade of a very difficult past
And happiness was just a word, until we found ourselves in the dark
Still searching for someone to save our hearts from the places where love has left its mark
So we stumble through it, and hope we find a light
Something to pull us out, something to help us fight
The sadness that we feel that has been instilled upon us
By what everyone around us has told us
That these words mean everything, if you have them you’re really living
But if you find yourself without them, you find yourself giving
To strangers, to passerby’s who look in your direction
Hoping to please people so much so you can be the object of their affection
Hoping they can free you from the dark, hoping they have good intentions
But sometimes all anyone wants from you is your attention
And freedom was never given; it has never been a hand out
All of these words that we have heard so much about
They are binding and they are embedded in our heads
So much so in fact that while we’re lying at home in our beds
We dream of finding love, so that we can find our happiness
Like they’ve been lost all this time and without them we are worthless
We can become prisoners to these words, we can fall victim
Crying and bleeding our way through life, like an addiction we try to kick them
Because we know that they are dangerous, we know that they can hurt
Though we know love is something other than pulling up your skirt
Some people are willing to do anything to have someone say, “I love you”
Even if it’s for all the wrong reasons, even if you knew
That they were just words to them, and there was no feeling behind it
And we’re mad about the system, when we designed it
We’re searching for our freedom from a prison that we made
With words to keep us hostage within the walls in which we are chained
We must free ourselves from the words that we’ve created
To make a life seem useless if it is not defined, because in this world if you’re not loved then you are hated
Words hold more power than anyone can see
But if we can free ourselves from them, then we will forever be free.
