Stone of the Sky

I often said you were the moon
From my threshold I would look on and swoon
I would admire the way you controlled the tides
How my heartbeat would rise and fall in stride
With the light that you cast on the sand
And my fingers would dance in it as my hand
Traced the translucent essence of you
All around me, cast in a shadow of blue moon
But it wasn’t a shadow at all you see
You lit up everything around me
And you bathed me in an all too familiar glow
Something I have always longed for and that I know
Could save me, and destroy me still
And it’s a pain I know all too well.

And while I lifted you up into the sky
I realized
That I was the darkness around you
And every night I held you up anew
Retreating into the black abyss that I called home
To make you shine that much brighter, my stone

And as everyone envied you I asked myself why
I couldn’t see my reflection in the ocean anymore
I saw only your golden hair, washing over the shore
And if I was the darkness that made you shine
And you were aglow each time I called you mine
And we accompanied each other into the night
And you were the only light

It’s no wonder when you left me
I felt lost without the moon, rising in my eyes
The unsung hero of the darkened sky
Where children’s dreams float up into nothingness
And stars cloaked in black dresses
Twinkle with prayers of days yet to come
And I too prayed for a day that would numb
Me, that a Novocain rain would pour down on me
And wrap me up in a blanket of blissful uncertainty

I was still, and the moon rose again
Waxing and waning into the nothingness
That I had become.
And once you’ve seen the moon you’ll never mourn
The darkness in which it was born.
