Counterpart
Freckles on the face of the sky
Stars reflecting in your eyes
As street lights pass by
Draped over the sky light
Of your car
And we could shut down every bar
In this town
And it still wouldn’t slow us down
Riding on the waves
Of this stereo, burying fears in little graves
That drift out of the window and away
From us as we speed down the interstate
And I look over at you to find
That the only thought that occupies my mind
Is how nicely your hand fits in mine
And it sends shivers down my spine
The way you fit me
Like a piece
That has been missing
You look at me the way I’ve always wanted
Someone
To and you
Are the light that shines on me
You are sunshine on a freckled cheek
You are the moonlight in the dark
You are every star
In that sky
And as I ride
In this car with you by my side
I can’t help but believe
In things like destiny
How could I feel something so intensely
And not feel more alive than ever before
Smiling until my face is sore
Until my cheeks quiver
And I stand to deliver
Something that will explain
Why I pour my words over you until all that remains
Are the breaths between phrases
Where we will fall for each other even in the spaces
Between
Because each time I blink
I am in an old scene
Replaying some memory
Of a place we’ve been or a thing that we’ve seen
I could go on forever
And never
Be able to adequately show
You how good it is to know
That my heart
Has recognized its counterpart
